WordPress Plugin Directory Surpasses One Billion Total Downloads

In Web news, WordPress by Rob Edsell

Alarms, clangers and horns all went off in the WordPress world this week when the WordPress project achieved an INSANE milestone and the official WP plugin directory surpassed

One billion total plugin downloads!!!

To give non-WP-nerds a bit of background; Plugins are ways to extend and add to the functionality that already exists in WordPress. The core of WordPress is designed to be lean and lightweight, to maximise flexibility and minimise ‘code bloat’, then Plugins offer custom functions and features so that each user can tailor their site to their specific needs. So you can add things like an email sign up for your newsletter, social media follow and share buttons, an on site forum so you can build a community around your business, the options are pretty much limitless.

We LOVE plugins, but as some of them are better than others we are super careful about which ones we use on your websites. We only use ones we know and trust having tested them thoroughly beforehand, and have partnered with Plugin makers WPMU Dev to supply most of our plugins as they are perfectly built for the Worx environment.

We tell all our customers about the plugins available to improve your website in our monthly ‘customer’ newsletter, so do have a read if you spot it in your inbox! The vast majority of these can be added to your website as a ‘free 30 minute job’, all you need to do is let us know which one/s you’d like. (If you’d like to receive this newsletter do pop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll add you to the list.)

As WordPress’ market share continues to grow, so does the amount of downloads from the plugin directory. It took nine years for the plugin directory to reach one billion downloads, when do you think it will reach two billion?
